Records show that William Blake penned Jerusalem while gazing across the vistas of the South Downs from this centuries old coaching inn. That was in 1803, but the views out to Goodwood and beyond are still breathtaking. Of late, the pub has a new talking point-namely the cracking food emanating from Giles Thompson's kitchen. Years as executive chef at the Ritz have put him in good fettle, although his cooking is now tilted towards the well-heeled country set. sussex game is a strong suit, but local flavours loom large across lamb cutlets with devilled kidneys and straw potatoes or sea bream from the coast with wilted spinach,tomato and caper salsa.
For afters, consider winter fruit crumble or triple chocolate brownie. Otherwise, nestle into the bar with a pint and a lunchtime bite-perhaps hot roast pork on Sussex "rough" bread or sausages and mash.
